My coding journey started just because I was scared of it. Doesn’t make much sense, does it? No, I wanted to learn to code because I wanted to get over the fear that coding held over me. I started this past summer by diving into data analysis. It sounds odd to immediately jump into something that requires coding experience but my reasoning was that I had to start somewhere, and might as well start somewhere where I had an interest.
And then August hit. And I got exposed to Mathematica, R, Python and so many wonderful computing languages and systems. And now, I’m in the process of writing a research paper that computationally analyzes an issue. I have grown so much from just last May, but there’s still more.
10,000 hours
It takes a 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert
I am nowhere close to being an expert in any of my chosen languages, however, I want to get there. Now, 10,000 hours may not sound too bad, but it’s a lot. 10,000 hours working 8 hours a day would take you 3.5 years, without a weekend. If you factor in weekends, that would be 4.5 years. It sounds impossible. But I want to get as close as I can. My personal goal is to have enough knowledge to build an accurate recognition system in a language of my choice. I want to spend the first couple of months continuing to experiment with different languages to see which I like the best and then choose. I might not hit 10,000 hours quickly, but what I will gain during this marathon for expertise is skill and a test of my dedication and perseverance.
